The tragic, romantic tale, of the ex-Deutsche Bank VP who died in the storms

As stormy weather batters both the UK and the US – again – today, it’s worth remembering Susan Hewitt, the former Deutsche Bank VP who died in the UK’s storm conditions just before Christmas.

While plenty of bankers exit the industry and do something completely different, Hewitt seems to have done so with aplomb and to have gone back to her roots in the process.

Having worked for in equity sales for Deutsche everywhere from London to New York, San Francisco and Chicago in her 20s and 30s, Hewitt married her childhood sweetheart 10 years ago and together they retired to the Welsh mountains where they both grew up. There, Hewitt taught yoga and worked at the Snowden Mountain Lodge, a hostel in the heart of Snowdonia.

As exits from banking go, Hewitt’s looks idyllic. It’s not everyone who escapes the City or Wall Street and finds simultaneous happiness with a childhood sweetheart (the only other well-known example being ex-Lehman CFO Erin Callan). Very sadly, however, Hewitt died aged 49 on December 22nd when she went to move a pipe that had become dislodged by a swollen stream in an attempt to restore the water supply to neighbouring houses. Our thoughts go to her family.

Take care in this wild weather.
