Carmen Segarra’s Goldman Sachs Lesson: Buy This Spy Pen

Carmen Segarra, the ex-Federal Reserve examiner who spent seven months working inside Goldman on behalf of the Fed, has provided a helpful lesson for anyone working in banking who is worried about a) their job, b) worried about malpractice. Get yourself a spy device.

Before she was dismissed, Propublica reports that Segarra, a ‘passionate and direct’ Ivy League educated lawyer, quickly decided that she needed some hard evidence of the sycophancy shown to Goldman employees by the Fed staff who were supposed to be monitoring them. She therefore went directly to The Spy Store and bought a miniature recording device. It was with that device that she made the 47.5 hours of tape recordings between Goldman Sachs and the Fed that are now causing a huge headache for both parties concerned.

Segarra’s exact choice of spy item is not specified. But if you’re looking to emulate her, you could purchase this voice recording pen for a price of just $129.  There’s also this calculator for $189, but does anyone use a calculator these days? Except, maybe people working for the Fed.

This isn’t the first time that recording devices have been used by whistle blowers in banks. In 2013, tapes were leaked of Anglo Irish bankers making crass references to Germany after they were bailed out by the eurozone.
